Nikka Super Rare Old Whisky

This blended Japanese whisky has been around since 1962, in a distinctive glass bottle clearly meant to represent a whisky still.

Super Rare Old is a famous Japanese blend from the Nikka company. This contains a high proportion of malt from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries.

Nose: With honey and caramel. The fruit tends toward over-ripe banana and stewed apples. Touch of nuts. Vaguely herbaceous and mildly earthy (dry earth)..

Palate: Starts with light honey and caramel, with maybe a touch of chocolate. Apple, pear, and various tropical fruits. Some lemon citrus shows up. Peanuts. Rye spices (cinnamon and cloves). A good mix of malt and grain, aspects of both are clearly present. Mild, but with a bit of heat on the swallow.

Finish: Medium short. Oak asserts itself a bit.
